Following the successful NMDPD Congress in Nice, France, we are delighted to invite you to join us for the 11th International Congress on Non-Motor Dysfunctions in Parkinson's Disease and Related Disorders, taking take place in Ljubljana, Slovenia on October 6-9, 2016. We hope that our congress in this vibrant and charming city will be as much a success as previous congresses.
NMDPD's aim is to discuss the new developments in the understanding of the non-motor aspects of Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders and their management. During this exciting congress, we shall have an opportunity to deliberate on brain diseases and how they contribute to cognition and behavior. We shall try to identify the psychological markers of Parkinson's dementia and of dementia with Lewy bodies, and also the biochemical and genetic factors involved. The identification in recent years of widespread alpha-synuclein deposits, from the periphery and up to the cortex, has contributed to our understanding but at the same time raised new and still unanswered questions as well as exciting new therapeutic possibilities. The overlap with Alzheimer's disease and with fronto-temporal dementia will be two other central issues.
Delirium, dementia, anxiety, psychosis and impulse control disorders frequently affect the lives of patients and caregivers even more than motor disturbances, and they therefore deserve special attention. Besides cognitive impairment, patients with movement disorders frequently complain of disturbances of the autonomic nervous system, REM sleep behavior disorder, and hyposmia, to name just a few. All these aspects which will be discussed in detail.
We encourage you to not only attend the congress but to also submit an abstract, thereby contributing to what we are confident will be a splendid scientific program in an amazing environment. Ljubljana, a picturesque city along the Ljubljanica and Sava rivers, will provide a wonderful opportunity to exchange ideas and present new research findings.
